Part of a solid money education includes teaching your children that, as a member of a community and a citizen of the world, they have a responsibility to other people outside themselves and their family. That means sharing. We all live on a small planet together, and we are all linked. Teaching your children a sense of social ethics includes an awareness of the importance of charity or giving.
The time to introduce them to charity is around three to four. Until then, children don’t understand that other people have different ideas and feelings.
Young children first learn the concept of sharing when they exchange or share toys. Sharing develops thoughtfulness and generosity. Encourage children to give to community charity projects by donating money or gently-used toys, books and clothing. This develops a concern for others by going beyond the family circle. Some parents expect a certain percentage of the allowance to be given to others.
In addition to teaching children to share, this exposes them to the satisfaction that comes from helping others. Decide as a family how often you’ll pass on usable things in good shape that you no longer need.
Make it a scheduled family event. Once every month or two, decide what you might like to pass on to a charity. Let the children have a say in what they want to donate. Another idea is to keep a box labelled for donations available to add things to as you come across them. When the box is full, take it to the charity. You can even arrange for it to be picked up, as many charities will collect contributions.
If you have the opportunity to give to a specific charitable organisation, explain to your son or daughter there are many children who don’t get Christmas presents. Get your child involved, take her to the toy store to pick out a gift, have her help wrap it and finally accompany you when you donate it. Children look up to their parents and learn by example.
Donating time is also a great way to help. Maybe the charity needs help at a fundraiser or contributions for a cake stall. If everyone donates a little time, far more gets done. Many children’s charities support children who have to spend a lot of time in hospital. Taking the time to make their stay more pleasant can be a great way to help a children’s charity. One way to help is by visiting and helping to brighten up the children’s wards with artwork.
There are many charities out there, but it is important to research before you donate. Unfortunately, there are people who will take advantage of others’ generosity. If you stick with the better known charities, such as the Make-a-Wish Foundation, Ronald McDonald House or UNICEF, you’ll be certain of helping a truly worthy cause.
There are also local children’s charities and programmes that are equally respected. If you need ideas, talk to your local children’s hospital. They can probably give you a list of organisations looking for donations or volunteers.
